Open Call - OST_ Mural Project
Our ambition is to transform our ‘old school’ into an innovative, design-led, community asset that combats rural isolation and nurtures rural entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation.
INTRODUCTION
The building is in a prominent position, opposite the new school. However, it has remained empty for 10 years and its condition has deteriorated. In 2019 we established OST_ as a charity and successfully applied for funding to buy the building and secure its future.
The project will act as a catalyst for our planned on-site activity and allow us to broaden awareness of the OST_ projects’ wider aims, which include the enhancements of rural regeneration and the advancement of Arts, Heritage and Culture . We believe it will also provide an opportunity to broaden awareness, increase membership and encourage participation from our neighbouring communities of benefit.
Our mural project will be our first on-site activity since bringing the building into community ownership and it will have a significant positive impact on a building that has fallen into dereliction over recent years.
The OST_ Mural Project is funded and supported by The National Lottery Community Fund.
THE COMMISSION
We are looking for a visual artist or team to work with our community (DG3) to develop and deliver an ambitious mural project on the front windows of the building.
Through conversation at engagement events we have discovered hugely personal and poignant stories about the building's heritage and the significant place it holds in the collective memories of our community. We’d like you to bring these stories to life.
We want you to engage and consult the wider community, local residents and school pupils through a short series of collaborative person-centred workshops that explore the history and stories of our ‘Old School’.
Through research we would like you to familiarise yourself with our community and the context of OST_ to develop proposals for the commission. This may take the form of a skillshare workshop series based on your field of expertise.
DELIVERY
It was envisaged that this work would physically take place in our community over the coming weeks. The current situation means that this may not be possible at first. The planning, delivery and project timetable will be discussed with the commissioned artist/s.
INSURANCE AND DISCLOSURE
The commissioned artist/team will carry public liability insurance and PVG disclosure appropriate for delivering the commission and all work within the community.
FEE AND BUDGET
The Artist/s fee is £2000, with a separate budget for materials and installation costs.
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit the following by email to hello@oldschoolthornhill.com:
Covering Letter outlining your suitability and briefly explaining how you might approach the commision during a period of social distancing.
